Step 1. Prepare the walls and install housewrap


Stripping the old siding is where you find out what you're really dealing with, and it's the point where a straightforward job can turn into a full vinyl siding replacement. Pull panels off in the reverse order they went up, starting at the top corner and working down, and stack any usable trim aside in case you need to match profiles later. Snap a level starter line


Measure up from your lowest point of the foundation, typically 1 inch above the bottom of the wall, and snap a level chalk line around the entire house. Nail the starter strip along that line, leaving a 1/4 inch gap between strip sections for expansion. Space nails every 8 to 10 inches, centered in the nail slots, not driven tight.

Set your corner posts


Corner posts go up next, plumbed with a 4-foot level before you nail them. Run them from 1/4 inch below the starter strip up to the top of the wall, and overlap sections by at least 1 inch if your wall height requires two lengths. Both inside and outside corner posts need the same slight nailing slack as the starter strip, since vinyl expands and contracts noticeably with temperature swings.


Install J-channel around openings


J-channel wraps every window, door, soffit edge, and gable end where a panel needs somewhere to tuck into, and it works alongside any exterior window trim you install. Cut miters at corners for a clean seam, and leave the same 1/4 inch nailing clearance throughout. Skipping J-channel around trim work is a common shortcut that leaves gaps where wind-driven rain gets behind the panels within a season or two.


Step 3. Cut and hang the vinyl siding panels


Now the actual installation of siding begins, and this is the step most homeowners picture when they think about the project. Hook the bottom lock of your first panel onto the starter strip, then push up until you feel it snap into place. Nail through the center of each slot, leaving that same quarter-inch of play so the panel can move with temperature changes.



Lock, don't force, each course


Never drive nails tight against the panel. Vinyl expands roughly 1 inch per 10 feet in a temperature swing, and a panel nailed flush will buckle by August. Leave enough slack that you can slide the panel sideways slightly with your hand after nailing.


A panel nailed too tight will buckle the first hot week it sees.

Cutting and overlapping panels


For straight cuts, a circular saw with the blade reversed leaves clean edges without chipping. Overlap panels by 1 inch minimum where two lengths meet, and stagger those overlap joints between courses so seams don't stack in a visible line up the wall.


  • Cut panels 1/4 inch short of J-channel openings to allow for expansion

  • Use the snap-lock punch every 6 inches on any panel you've cut and need to hang at a top course

  • Keep overlap seams on the back side of the house or facing away from the street when possible


Working your way up each course, check every few rows with a level. Small errors compound fast, and by the time you're near the roofline, an unlevel course is obvious from the sidewalk.


Step 4. Add trim and finish the job right


The last course under your soffit is where sloppy work shows up fastest, so slow down here. Measure the gap between your final full panel and the soffit, then rip the top panel to fit and lock it into utility trim (sometimes called finish trim) nailed along the underside of the soffit. This gives the top edge a clean, finished lock instead of a raw cut edge exposed to weather.


Finish every penetration and edge


Any spot where a pipe, vent, light fixture, or hose bib pokes through the wall needs its own trim ring or boot, caulked with a paintable exterior sealant rated for vinyl. Skipping these small details is how water finds its way behind an otherwise perfect installation. Check gable ends, dryer vents, and exterior outlets specifically, since these get missed more than any other spot on the wall.

Final walkthrough checklist
